What is pain coaching?

by | May 18, 2024 | Chronic pain, Pain Coach, Uncategorized

Chronic pain is a specialist field, so Pain Coaching means something specific.

Pain coaching – a science, evidence and philosophically based way of being and helping you understand and overcome your chronic pain

Pain Coaching starts by listening to you, the person. What is your story so far? What are your needs? Concerns? Questions? What do you want to address in particular?

Then we work together. I am your guide.

Helping you understand your pain and experiences, and making meaning of what has happened and what is happening, before designing a individualised way forward.

I meet you where you are. We clarify your ever-changing needs and start there each time so you can follow your path, reconnecting with what matters whilst building health.

One of the key principles of Pain Coaching is live meaningfully now. Together we look at how.

    • practical skills, strategies and know-how to live your best life now

    • the pain coach guides, encourages and enables you to follow your chosen path

    • reconnecting with what matters to you, finding meaning and purpose in your daily living

    • building health and wellness

    • turning the traditional thinking on its head — instead of waiting to feel better to start living, you start living now to get better. Live now!

    • pain coaching guides you on the how…you know what you want to do and why it matters, but not the how…

For over 20 years I have been pioneering Pain Coaching as a practical way of being to help people understand and overcome their chronic pain.

This is on-going work as the science, philosophy and lived experiences of chronic pain evolve.

The basics of being a pain coach

What should you look out for if you want to work with a Pain Coach?

Pain Coaching is specific.

It is a highly specialised and underpinned by a positive and compassionate spirit, offering practical ways forward for you to shape a positive future.

Pain Coaching focuses on you, the whole person, your needs and dreams, meeting you where you are and walking forward together–a caring collaboration.

The Pain Coach sees you first, the person, as someone with strengths, autonomy, capability, and a positive history.

It is a way of being grounded in the spirit of caring concern, a wish to help, guide, encourage and support you make the necessary changes to shape a positive future.

The complexity of being human and suffering necessitates the Pain Coach to have a multidisciplinary background.

My background is in adult nursing, rehabilitation, physiotherapy, coaching, pain science, strength & conditioning, motivational interviewing, positive psychology and other whole person approaches.

Training and experience matter enormously.

But not as much as accurate empathy, the ability to connect, compassion, to be present and to see the person as someone with strengths and capability. The evidence show that these matter more.

These are the basics of Pain Coaching.

Anything short of this is not Pain Coaching.

Who is pain coaching for?

Pain Coaching is for you if you are suffering chronic (persistent) pain, you want to understand your pain, and learn how to move forward in positive ways.

** Positive means a clear picture of success and taking steps in that direction each day.

The nature of chronicity is to feel stuck and to be struggling to move forward.

Life is difficult with limitations and frustrations.

You know what you want to do, you know why it is important to you, but you just don’t know how to do it.

What practical steps should you take?

You have your own personal experience of your pain, and story of how you have come to be where you are when we start working together.

Chronic pain is unique to you, the person.

We start where you are.
