3 quick ways to change your experience

And one way for sustained positive change

Welcome.

What are you feeling right now?

That is your experience.

It is governed by your beliefs, expectations, and where your attention is.

Whilst these underpin your experience, you only experience what you experience, not what is behind it.

That is what can make it harder to grasp initially.

How do you change your experience quickly?

What do I mean by quickly?

Well, it only takes a moment to change how you feel.

That is because we only live in this moment.

Life is never longer than a moment. The rest is remembered (past) or imagined (future), and hence not real.

This is it.

Coming to know this is immensely powerful because now you are alive.

To change your experience is to change your state.

To change your state, you need to change your biology. Or you can think of it as changing the conditions — the ones you can change.

How?

  1. Change your focus — when you move your attention, your experience changes because now you are seeing through a new lens. For example, instead of zooming in on a part of your body, you can zoom out to take in the whole of your body and beyond. This dilutes and changes your experience.
  2. Change your language — what are you telling yourself? For example, “I am having a bad day”. Fundamentally this is not possible because you only live a moment at a time. You cannot have a bad day. Many, many moments with a range of different experiences is the reality. Aligning what you are saying to yourself with reality changes your experience.
  3. Move — movement, which includes breathing, changes your biology very quickly and hence your experience.

Here’s the key.

To do these things without attachment to the outcome.

Sustained positive change

For sustained positive change you need to update your beliefs.

If you want to transform your pain, you have to transform your beliefs about it.

Why?

Because your beliefs underpin your thoughts, feelings and what you do — i.e./ your experience.

Transform your life to transform your pain.

Or, as I call it, living yourself better.

That’s the work we do together.
